Stunning Sassy

The first time I saw Sassy (then known as A.C.) I thought “Wow, that is a beautiful feline, she looks like a Maine Coon”. When I found out she was bought from a pet shop, I realized that there’s a good chance she is at least partly Maine Coon (a breed of cat known to be big, long-haired, tabby cats with large green eyes - just look at Sassy’s photos again to see what I mean). I had always wanted a Maine Coon, so I would have given anything to take Sassy home with me - turns out I didn’t pay a cent for such a splendid cat.

As for personality, Sassy has the quintessential cattitude - she shows her affection for mere human beings when she feels like it. When she was living with her previous owners she generally slept in places where no-one would see her (preferably near the ceiling somewhere) and only appeared for supper. Slowly but surely, when we were looking after her, she became friendlier and she revealed her unique brand of love.

When Merlin first came on the scene (see the next article for his story), Sassy was highly unimpressed with having to share her house with a little clown of a cat. She usually greeted him with a swat and a hiss, to which he would respond in the sweetest way possible. Whether she liked it or not, he was determined to be her friend. Eventually she gave way and tolerated his presence. Today they often sleep on the same bed and have highly entertaining games of soccer (with a paper ball) and wrestling - which Sassy always wins, of course.

To ‘Queen Sass’ the world is her playground and everything in it must certainly belong to her. As for dogs, she treats them with true Sassy contempt; if they get in her way they’ll surely pay the price! When it comes to people, she will accept strokes and the odd kiss on the head and when she’s in a really good mood she responds with a deep purr. Although she very rarely voices her opinion by meowing, the expression in her big green eyes speaks volumes.

In her own way, Sassy is an endearing feline who deserves the good life; I’m glad she’s sharing mine!
